EGBA: Betting Markets Heat Up In Race For European Commission PresidentReading Time: 2 minutes

 

Following the recent European elections, the political focus in Brussels is now firmly on who will get which of the EU’s top jobs.

With intense debate about who will become the much-coveted President of the next European Commission, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) brings you the latest odds from the betting markets for the Spitzenkandidaten race.

The betting odds are displayed as ratios and forecasted percentage win probability. Also indicated are the changes to the betting odds compared to October 2018, when the market opened.

  • Manfred Weber (EPP) – 2/1 (33.3%). Improved from 2/1 (33.3%) in October 2018.
  • Michel Barnier (EPP) – 3/1 (25%). Improved from 16/1 (5.9%) in October 2018.
  • Margrethe Vestager (ALDE) – 3/1 (25%). Improved from 20/1 (4.8%) in October 2018.
  • Frans Timmermans (S&D) – 8/1 (11.1%). Improved from 25/1 (3.8%) in October 2018.
  • Other notable candidates: Christine Lagarde (EPP) – 16/1 (5.9%); Kristalina Georgieva (EPP) – 16/1 (5.9%); Dalia Grybauskaite – 20/1 (4.8%); Guy Verhofstadt (ALDE) – 20/1 (4.8%); Helle Thorning Schmidt 20/1 (4.8%); Mark Rutte 20/1 (4.8%); Jan Zahradil 33/1 (2.9%).

 

“Weber is still the favourite, but the shrewd money has been put on the EPP’s Michel Barnier, whose odds have sharply improved.” – Matthew Shaddick, Head of Politics, Ladbrokes.

Shares of Madison Down 9.3%

The Shares of Madison Square Garden Co have fallen their most ever after it disclosed the steep cost of building a new venue in the gambling mecca. The stock fell as much as 9.3% to $266, hitting its lowest mark since January.

Investors were jarred by potential cost overruns of a concert and event venue called the Las Vegas Sphere. MSG approved a preliminary construction budget of $1.2 billion, but a contractor estimated the expense would be $1.7 billion.

Even $1.2 billion would dwarf the budget of other venues. Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena, which opened just down the street in 2016, cost $375 million.

MSG plans to open the high-tech Las Vegas venue in 2021. It will host concerts, product launches, award shows and sporting events and feature an interior display the size of three football fields, the company said.

Playson signs partnership with Superbet

Casino software developer Playson has signed a deal to provide its impressive suite of games to top Romanian operator Superbet.

The agreement will see the innovative slot provider boost the sportbook’s casino offering with titles including Solar Queen, Vikings Fortune: Hold and Win and Fruit Supreme: 25 lines, the latest addition to its Timeless Fruit Slots series.

Having recently obtained its Romanian licence from the country’s regulator (ONJN), this deal is an important step in expanding its influence in the Romanian market and across Eastern Europe.
